For OT, PT and SLP clinics in Wyoming: three state boards license the disciplines, a physical therapist may begin treatment without a prescription, Wyoming Medicaid covers children’s therapy under EPSDT and adults within its own rules, and telehealth follows the patient’s location. Every rule here is quoted from its source.1,2,3,4,5,6

Key takeaways

  • In Wyoming, physical therapists are licensed by the Wyoming Board of Physical Therapy, occupational therapists by the Wyoming Board of Occupational Therapy and speech-language pathologists by the Wyoming State Board of Examiners of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, each under its own licensing law and rules.1,7,8
  • For physical therapy, a physical therapist may initiate physical therapy with or without a prescription, but must refer the patient to another health care provider when symptoms or conditions may need care beyond physical therapy or physical therapy is contraindicated.2,9,10,11
  • Wyoming Medicaid covers occupational, physical and speech therapy for children under EPSDT, and its adult coverage, for members 21 and older, is limited to restorative therapy.3,4,5,6,12,13,14
  • Telehealth to a patient in Wyoming requires authority to practice where the patient is located; the PT Compact, the OT Compact and the ASLP Interstate Compact stand as their commissions state for Wyoming.15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22
  • Medicare’s plan of care must be certified by a physician or nonphysician practitioner, and since January 2025 a signed order or referral on file can stand in for that signature on an initial plan delivered within 30 days of the evaluation.23
  • For Wyoming Medicaid, a provider keeps medical and financial records for at least six years from the end of the state fiscal year (July through June) in which the services were rendered, and until any audit in progress is resolved. An occupational therapist keeps the records of supervising an assistant for three years.24,25
  • The business entity is registered with the Wyoming Secretary of State, and the state’s corporation and LLC laws let a therapy entity offer professional services only through licensed owners or employees.26,27,28,29,30,31
  • A child under three with a developmental delay is referred to Wyoming’s Early Intervention and Education Program (EIEP), which runs separately from an outpatient clinic’s own intake.32,33,34,35,36

Who licenses OTs, PTs and SLPs in Wyoming?

Three state boards license the three disciplines in Wyoming, and each publishes its own licensing law, rules, renewal cycle and continuing-education requirement.1,7,8 A clinic that employs more than one discipline keeps three registers, not one.

Compact privileges for practitioners licensed elsewhere are covered under telehealth below.

What does a Wyoming license renewal require?

Each board sets its own cycle and hours, listed in the table above, and the register template at the end of this page tracks them per clinician.1,7,8 A renewal missed is a lapse, and the board’s own rules say what a lapsed licensee may and may not do; the clinic reads those rules before a clinician’s renewal date passes, not after.

Can a patient see a Wyoming PT, OT or SLP without a referral?

State law answers this discipline by discipline, and a payer may still require a referral the law does not. For physical therapy, a physical therapist may initiate physical therapy with or without a prescription, but must refer the patient to another health care provider when symptoms or conditions may need care beyond physical therapy or physical therapy is contraindicated.2,9,10,11 Before any physical therapy service, the patient is directed to posted information and given a handout explaining the therapist’s education and degrees, that governmental or workers’ compensation programs may not cover the service unless a physician, physician assistant, dentist, chiropractor, podiatrist or nurse practitioner prescribed it, and that the patient’s insurance may not cover it. Wyoming Medicaid, as a payer, needs initial orders certifying that therapy is medically necessary, with the practitioner renewing the orders at least every 90 days for members 21 and older and every 180 days for members 20 and under.2,9,10,11 For occupational therapy, the licensing law defines occupational therapy to include evaluating the factors that affect daily living, rest and sleep, education, work, play, leisure and social participation, and requires a license to practice.72,73,74,75 The occupational therapy rules have the licensee refer clients to, or consult with, other service providers when additional knowledge and expertise is required.72,73,74,75 For speech-language pathology, the licensing law defines speech-language pathology to include evaluation, habilitation and rehabilitation of delayed development and disorders of communication, literacy and swallowing, and requires a license to practice.76,77,78 Wyoming Medicaid, as a payer, needs initial orders certifying that speech therapy is medically necessary, as part of a treatment plan the practitioner reviews.76,77,78

The payer’s rule is separate. Medicare pays for outpatient therapy under a plan of care certified by a physician or nonphysician practitioner, and the regulation’s 2025 text lets a signed order or referral on file, with the plan delivered within 30 days of the initial evaluation, stand in for that signature on an initial plan.23 Wyoming Medicaid’s referral and prior-authorization rules are in the next section. A commercial plan’s rule is in its member contract and provider manual, and the clinic keeps a copy of each.

How does Wyoming Medicaid pay for pediatric and adult therapy?

Wyoming Medicaid is run by the Wyoming Department of Health, through its Division of Healthcare Financing, and a clinic enrolls through its provider enrollment route before it bills.79 For children, the federal EPSDT benefit requires the state to cover services that correct or ameliorate a condition found at a screening, whether or not the state plan covers them for adults.80 For members 20 and under, Wyoming Medicaid can also cover maintenance (habilitative) therapy, such as therapy for a child who is not walking or talking at the expected age. Once prior authorization is needed, habilitative therapy for children can be authorized up to 180 days at a time, and EPSDT covers children from birth through age 20.3,4,5,6

For members 21 and older, Wyoming Medicaid covers restorative therapy only, therapy that helps a member regain or improve skills or strength.12,13,14 Wyoming Medicaid sets a threshold of 20 physical therapy, 20 occupational therapy and 30 speech therapy visits a calendar year for members under 21 and for members 21 and older. Beyond it, the provider requests prior authorization from Telligen, which can authorize acute-condition visits up to eight at a time.81,82,83,84,85 Wyoming Medicaid’s provider manual describes members choosing any participating Wyoming provider unless Medicaid restricts the choice through provider lock-in or an approved Freedom of Choice waiver, with payment made only to enrolled providers. The Division of Healthcare Financing administers the program and Acentra Health processes claims as fiscal agent.86,87 The fee schedule is published by the agency, and a clinic reads the current file rather than a remembered rate.88

How does Wyoming Medicaid want OT, PT and SLP claims coded?

Therapy documentation records time in and time out. A 15-minute unit is rounded down when seven minutes or less of the next unit is used and may be rounded up at eight minutes or more, and all modalities on the same date of service count as one visit. Therapy claims always carry a referring, attending, prescribing or ordering provider’s NPI, and the licensed therapist signs an assistant’s progress notes within 30 days.89,90,91,92 The codes, modifiers and authorization forms are the manual’s and change with it, so the clinic reads the current therapy sections before its first claim and records the manual’s page-updated date in the payer register.

Does Wyoming Medicaid pay for therapy in schools?

Wyoming Medicaid’s School-Based Services program reimburses local education agencies for health-related services, including occupational, physical and speech-language therapy, listed in a Medicaid-eligible student’s IEP or IFSP. CMS approved the program’s State Plan Amendment as of July 2022. For speech therapy billed by other providers, the provider manual lists diagnosis or treatment in a school-based setting among the conditions it does not cover.93,94 A school’s billing is the district’s, under its own program; an outpatient clinic’s claim for the same child is a separate matter with its own eligibility and authorization.

Does Wyoming Medicaid cover therapy by telehealth?

Wyoming Medicaid pays for telehealth delivered by real-time interactive audio and video, billed by the distant site with the same procedure codes and rates as in person plus the GT or 95 modifier. Speech therapists are among the distant-site practitioners the manual names, and consent is obtained verbally, by email or by text and documented.95,96,97 The telehealth section below covers the state’s own rules for the session itself.

What are Wyoming’s telehealth rules for therapy?

A therapist treating a patient by video needs authority to practice where the patient is located at the time of the session, and the federal telehealth site says so plainly: licensure follows the patient’s location, and a compact privilege is one route to it.15 Wyoming lets each licensing board adopt telehealth rules, and all three therapy boards have: a therapist treating a patient located in Wyoming by telehealth needs a Wyoming license (for speech-language pathology, or a compact privilege) and holds telehealth care to the in-person standard. The physical therapy rules require informed consent to telehealth, which may be verbal or written, including by email, and the occupational therapy rules require consent before telehealth services begin, documented in the client’s record.98,99,100,101,102,103

OT Compact (occupational therapy)Member, enacted as the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact (W.S. 33-40-201 through 33-40-216), not yet accepting applications: the commission’s Before You Apply table, which lists only member states, gives "Not Yet" for Wyoming (October 31, 2026), and the Wyoming board’s page says it is a member of the OT CompactThe OT Compact Commission17,18,19
ASLP Interstate Compact (speech-language pathology and audiology)Member, enacted by SF 87 (2020) (W.S. 33-33-401 and 33-33-402), not yet issuing privileges: the commission’s map lists Wyoming with SF 87 (2020), and its home page says registration is open only for practitioners in Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia (October 31, 2026)The ASLP-IC Commission20,21,22

A compact privilege is not a national license: it is a privilege to practice in the specific member state that issued it, under that state’s licensing law, and a state that has enacted the compact may not yet be issuing privileges, which is why the table names the commission’s current status.16

Which business steps are specific to Wyoming?

The entity is registered with the Wyoming Secretary of State, and the state’s corporation and LLC laws set how a therapy entity offers professional services.26,27 Wyoming law lets a corporation whose stock is owned only by persons licensed in a profession practice that profession through its licensed stockholders or employees, and a corporation or limited liability company may offer professional services only through licensed owners or employees, each of whom stays as fully responsible as though practicing individually.28,29,30,31 State tax registration is with the Wyoming Department of Revenue, Excise Tax Division.104,105 Wyoming’s sales tax is levied on retail sales of tangible personal property and on the services the statute lists, such as the repair, alteration or improvement of tangible personal property. Prosthetic devices, hearing aids, mobility enhancing equipment, durable medical equipment and assistive devices sold under a prescription are exempt, as are disposable supplies used in direct medical care.106,107,108 Wyoming’s Worker’s Compensation Act applies to all workers in the employments it lists as extrahazardous, which include NAICS subsector 621, ambulatory health care services, and subsector 622, hospitals. An employer subject to the act applies for coverage with the Department of Workforce Services and receives a statement of coverage before starting work.109,110 A city or county business license is a local question, answered by the city hall of the clinic’s address. The startup-costs guide carries the budget worksheet these registrations go into.

What record and privacy rules apply in Wyoming?

For Wyoming Medicaid, a provider keeps medical and financial records for at least six years from the end of the state fiscal year (July through June) in which the services were rendered, and until any audit in progress is resolved. An occupational therapist keeps the records of supervising an assistant for three years.24,25 Two federal periods sit beside it and are often confused with it: Medicare requires 7 years for documentation of orders, certifications, referrals and payment requests, and HIPAA requires 6 years for its own compliance documentation, and neither sets the retention period for the clinical chart.111,112

The occupational therapy board’s code of ethics lets a licensee divulge a client’s records only as the law authorizes or with the client’s consent, and the physical therapy rules require a licensee providing telehealth to keep the patient’s health information private and confidential, including under HIPAA and other federal and state law.113,114 A business that owns or licenses computerized personal identifying information about Wyoming residents investigates a security breach promptly and in good faith and, if misuse has occurred or is reasonably likely, notifies affected residents as soon as possible and without unreasonable delay, unless law enforcement delays it in writing.115,116 Wyoming requires any person who knows or has reasonable cause to believe or suspect that a child has been abused or neglected to report it immediately to the child protective agency, the Department of Family Services’ field or regional offices, or to local law enforcement. Any person who knows or has reasonable cause to believe a vulnerable adult is being abused, neglected, exploited, intimidated or abandoned reports it immediately to law enforcement or the Department of Family Services.117,118,119,120,121

Which Wyoming rules shape a pediatric clinic?

Wyoming’s Early Intervention and Education Program, in the Department of Health’s Behavioral Health Division, provides early intervention at no cost to families for infants and toddlers, including physical, occupational and speech-language therapy, and its regional programs serve children with disabilities from birth through age 5, with free screenings at fourteen child development centers. Part C referral forms go to the program by email or fax.32,33,34,35,36 A private clinic’s services run beside the early intervention program rather than inside it.

Which Wyoming rules shape an adult clinic?

Medicare claims from Wyoming go to Noridian Healthcare Solutions, the Medicare Administrative Contractor for Jurisdiction F, Parts A and B (Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming), whose local coverage articles for therapy are the ones a Wyoming clinic reads.122 Wyoming Medicaid’s adult therapy rules are in the Medicaid section above. Wyoming’s workers’ compensation claims are paid under the Department of Workforce Services’ fee schedule in effect on the date of service, which uses the national RBRVS with five conversion factors, one of them for physical medicine, radiology and surgery.123

Which associations and directory pages serve Wyoming?

The state chapters are APTA Wyoming for physical therapy, the Wyoming Occupational Therapy Association (WYOTA) for occupational therapy and the Wyoming Speech-Language-Hearing Association (WyoSHA) for speech-language pathology.124,125,126 On DrSensory, families browse Wyoming clinics by discipline on the occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy pages for the state, which the directory builds from the clinic addresses it holds; a clinic appears on the pages of its own address.127

Which Wyoming cities have DrSensory city pages?

Beyond its three Wyoming pages, the directory publishes city pages for one Wyoming city, Cheyenne, three pages across the three disciplines, each listing the clinics whose address is in that city; a clinic appears on the city page of its address without any action of its own, and a city or discipline without a page is reached through the state page.127

How many Wyoming PT, OT and SLP clinics does DrSensory list?

DrSensory lists 11 PT, OT and SLP clinics in Wyoming, on its occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy pages for the state.127

Is your clinic one of the 11?

An unclaimed listing shows what public records hold: the name, address, phone and therapy. A claimed listing carries the Claimed and verified badge and the clinic’s own name, address, phone, hours, website, therapies, ages served and insurance accepted, corrected in the clinic’s own editor.

Claiming starts with finding the listing and confirming the clinic’s email with a six-digit code. Claiming is free. Nothing is charged. The subscription, the one paid tier, adds a description, photos, clinicians, reviews and family messages, at $349.99 a year or $29.99 a month for the first location.

How might two Wyoming clinics plan a launch?

A pediatric occupational therapy clinic in Cheyenne. Hypothetical; a planning exercise, not a claim about demand in Cheyenne.

  • Licensing: the owner and one occupational therapy assistant are verified with the Wyoming Board of Occupational Therapy; the assistant’s supervision rule from the board goes into the staffing plan.
  • Referrals: the licensing law’s rule for occupational therapy sets the intake script; Wyoming Medicaid’s referral and authorization rules sit beside it.
  • Medicaid: enrollment is filed before the first family is scheduled, and the program’s authorization rule for children, quoted above, is written into the scheduling routine.
  • Early intervention: families with children under three are told how the referral to Wyoming’s Early Intervention and Education Program (EIEP) works and that the clinic’s services run beside it.

  • Referrals: the licensing law’s direct-access rule, which lets a physical therapist begin treatment with or without a prescription sets the intake script; Medicare’s plan-of-care routine is written before the first Medicare patient, with the signed order or referral held on file where the referring practitioner sends one.
  • Medicare: enrollment through Noridian Healthcare Solutions; the contractor’s therapy articles are read for the codes the clinic bills.
  • Telehealth: the patient-location check is part of every video session’s note; a patient who travels out of state is seen only where the clinic holds authority.
  • Business: the entity is registered with the Wyoming Secretary of State in the form the state’s law allows, and the local business license is filed with the city.

Frequently asked questions

Can I practice in Wyoming on a compact privilege from another state?

Only as the compact’s commission states for Wyoming: the table above gives each compact’s status, and a privilege is issued for a specific member state under that state’s licensing law, not as a national license.16,17,18,19,20,21,22

Does Wyoming Medicaid cover therapy for adults?

Within its own rules: its adult coverage, for members 21 and older, is limited to restorative therapy, as the Medicaid section quotes, while children’s coverage runs under EPSDT.12,13,14,80

Do patients in Wyoming need a referral before therapy?

The licensing law answers per discipline and the referral section quotes each rule; a payer may still require a referral or a certified plan of care the law does not, so the intake script carries both rules.2,9,10,11,23

Can I treat a Wyoming patient by telehealth from another state?

Only with authority to practice in Wyoming, since licensure follows the patient’s location; a compact privilege is one route where the compact is live for the state.15,16

How long must a Wyoming clinic keep therapy records?

For Wyoming Medicaid, at least six years from the end of the state fiscal year in which the services were rendered, or until an audit in progress is resolved; occupational therapists keep assistant supervision records for three years.24,25 Medicare’s 7-year and HIPAA’s 6-year rules cover other documents and do not shorten it.111,112

Which entity can a Wyoming therapy clinic form?

Wyoming law lets a corporation whose stock is owned only by persons licensed in a profession practice that profession through its licensed stockholders or employees, and a corporation or limited liability company may offer professional services only through licensed owners or employees, each of whom stays as fully responsible as though practicing individually.28,29,30,31 Registration with the Wyoming Secretary of State follows the choice.26,27

How is a young child referred to early intervention in Wyoming?

Through Wyoming’s Early Intervention and Education Program in the Department of Health, which serves infants and toddlers at no cost to families through fourteen regional child development centers. A Part C referral form may be sent to the program by email or fax.32,33,34,35,36

Where do families find Wyoming therapy clinics on DrSensory?

On the state’s occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy pages and on the city pages listed above, built from the clinic addresses the directory holds; a clinic’s listing appears on the pages of its own address, and a paid listing adds the clinic’s own description, hours and specialties.127,128
