Quick answer. Our top diaper bag is the Dagne Dover Indi backpack: water-resistant, cushioned neoprene, a wipeable changing mat and stroller clips included, from $185 (Small) to $250 (Large).1,2 For value, the Skip Hop Forma ($79) comes with packing cubes, a changing pad and padded straps.3
A diaper bag carries the same few things every day (diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, a bottle, your own phone and keys) and has to let you find them one-handed. This guide covers what makes a bag work, four backpacks from $79 to $250 checked against their makers’ own pages, and what each one is best at.
Key takeaways
- A backpack leaves both hands free; check the straps and the bag’s own empty weight, which runs from about 3 to 4.5 lb here.2,4
- Look for an insulated bottle pocket, a changing pad and stroller straps or clips in the box.2,3
- A wipe-clean exterior and lining save you; check whether the bag can be washed at all.2,3
- Size to your stage: Dagne Dover says its Small is for parents past the newborn months.5
- A laptop sleeve turns a diaper bag into a work bag.2,6
What to Look for in a Great Diaper Bag
Organization and Storage
Pockets you can reach without unpacking: an insulated pocket for bottles, a separate place for wipes, and somewhere for a soiled outfit. Packing cubes, like the Forma’s insulated and mesh cubes, keep things findable.3
Style and Carrying Comfort
Backpacks put the weight on both shoulders and free your hands. Look for padded or wider straps, a padded back panel, and stroller clips so the bag can ride on the stroller instead of you.2,4
Durability and Ease of Cleaning
Water-resistant outer fabric and a wipeable lining. Check the care label: the Dagne Dover is hand-wash only, and the Forma and BÉIS are spot clean.2,3,4
What makes a good diaper bag?
One you can open with one hand, that holds a day’s supplies without becoming a bottomless pit, comes with a changing pad, and is comfortable for the hours you actually carry it.

1. Best Overall: Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Backpack
Who it is for: Parents who want one bag for baby days and work days that does not look like a diaper bag.
The Indi is neoprene, which Dagne Dover describes as water-resistant, shock absorbent and cushioned, with a recycled lining. Every size comes with a washable zipper bag, two stroller clips, an insulated bottle holder, a zip pouch, a wipeable changing mat and a shoe bag.2
There are three sizes: Small ($185, 3 lb), which Dagne Dover says is for parents done with the newborn phase; Medium ($225, 3 lb 8 oz, 16.39 L, a sleeve for most 13-inch laptops); and Large ($250, 4 lb). It is hand-wash only: the hardware can chip in a machine.1,2,5
What it does well
The spec that decides it: the size. Dagne Dover says the Small is for parents past the newborn phase, so with a newborn, size up.5
2. Best for Ultimate Organization: Skip Hop Forma Diaper Backpack
Who it is for: Parents who want everything sorted, for the least money.
A front section holds two packing cubes, one insulated for bottles and one mesh for clothes; insulated side bottle pockets, elastic interior pockets and a phone pocket do the rest. A cushioned changing pad and stroller straps come with it, and the backpack straps are padded. It is 16 by 8 by 14 inches, holds a laptop, and is spot clean.3
What it does well
What it does not
- Polyester, spot clean only.3
- Looks like a diaper bag.
The spec that decides it: the price. $79 buys cubes, a pad and stroller straps, which is why it is the value pick.3
3. Most Stylish (That Doesn't Look Like a Diaper Bag): Freshly Picked Classic City Diaper Bag II
Who it is for: Parents who want a vegan leather backpack that passes for an everyday bag.
Freshly Picked’s full-size diaper backpack is vegan leather with a wipeable nylon interior, 10 pockets, a nylon changing pad, padded backpack straps, a wide-zip opening and a sleeve for laptops up to 15 inches; 12 by 16 by 6.5 inches, $179.6
What it does well
What it does not
- $179.6
- Backpack and top handle only.
The spec that decides it: the look. It carries like a diaper bag and looks like a backpack you would buy anyway.6
4. Best for Travel: BÉIS The Ultimate Diaper Backpack
Who it is for: Families who fly or travel often and carry a lot.
The biggest bag here at 24.42 L. A padded changing station folds out of a zip compartment in the back panel, with pockets for wipes and diapers; the front pouch detaches and becomes a fanny pack or crossbody bag. A trolley sleeve slides over a suitcase handle. The shoulder straps are wider and padded, the back panel is padded, and a stink bag, a pacifier pouch and two stroller straps come with it.4
It is nylon, spot clean, weighs 4.54 lb empty and costs $198.4
What it does well
The spec that decides it: the capacity: 24.42 L and a detachable pouch for the plane seat.4

Frequently asked questions
What is the best diaper bag?
Our top pick is the Dagne Dover Indi backpack, in cushioned, water-resistant neoprene with a changing mat and stroller clips included, from $185.1,2 For value, the Skip Hop Forma at $79.3
What is the best value diaper bag?
The Skip Hop Forma ($79): packing cubes, a cushioned changing pad, stroller straps and padded straps for less than half the price of the others here.3
Is the Dagne Dover Indi comfortable to carry all day?
Dagne Dover describes its neoprene as cushioned, and the bag weighs 3 to 4 lb empty by size; two stroller clips let you hang it on the stroller instead. It does not publish a strap-padding or back-panel spec, so try it on with a full load if you can.2,5
What size diaper bag do I need?
With a newborn you carry a day’s diapers, wipes, spare outfits and bottles, so size up: Dagne Dover’s Medium (16.39 L) or Large, or the BÉIS (24.42 L). The Indi Small is meant for after the baby phase.2,4,5
Do diaper bags come with a changing pad?
All four here do: a wipeable mat (Dagne Dover), a cushioned pad (Skip Hop), a nylon pad (Freshly Picked) and a built-in fold-out station (BÉIS). Check before you buy others.2,3,4,6
Is a backpack diaper bag better than a tote?
A backpack leaves your hands free and puts the weight on both shoulders, which is why all four picks here are backpacks.
When to ask a professional: If carrying a bag and a baby leaves your back, neck or wrists sore for days, a physical therapist can help with lifting and carrying. Read about low back pain or find a physical therapist.

Gear can only do so much. If something about how your child eats, moves, or talks has been on your mind, a pediatric therapist is the person who assesses it — and most families do not need a referral to ask.
