How do I set up the classroom for a student with SPD?
Start with the room, because it's free, it's yours, and for an over-responsive student it is the whole intervention.
Seat position. Away from the door, the pencil sharpener, the sink, the heating vent, and the walkway. Back to a wall if possible, so the student isn't monitoring movement behind them. Near you, not near the busiest peer.
Light. Fluorescent overheads are a common and under-recognized problem. If you can turn off the bank above the student's area and use a lamp or window light, do. Many teachers find the whole class calmer.
Sound. Tennis balls or felt on chair legs. Soft surfaces where you can — a rug, a curtain — reduce echo more than people expect. Warn before the bell, the fire drill, the hand dryer.
Visual load. Bare the wall behind your teaching position. Displays are fine; a wall of them behind the board costs attention continuously for a student who can't filter.
A quiet corner. A beanbag or a chair behind a low shelf, with a lamp, where a student can go without asking and without it being a consequence. The rule is that it's a place to recover, not a place to be sent. Building one is covered in calm-down corner.
Predictability. A posted schedule, the same sequence each day where possible, and a heads-up before anything changes. This is the cheapest strategy on the page and the one most often skipped.

How do I use movement breaks and heavy work in class?
This is where the strong evidence lives. Deep pressure tactile input has the best support of any sensory strategy in the 2025 review,1 and in a classroom it looks like heavy work: pushing, pulling, carrying, and squeezing that loads the muscles and joints.
Before seated work, not during it. A student who seeks input concentrates better after they've had it. Two minutes of heavy work before a writing task does more than a cushion under the chair during it — which, on the evidence, does nothing measurable.1
Heavy work that needs no equipment:
- Wall pushes — hands flat on the wall, push as if moving it, ten seconds, three times
- Chair push-ups — hands on the seat, lift the body, hold
- Carrying: the book bin to the library, the chairs up at the end of the day, the ball bag to PE
- Erasing the board with both hands, pushing hard

Whole-class movement breaks work better than singling one student out, and they cost nothing. Thirty seconds of jumping jacks, a stretch to the ceiling, or a lap of the room between activities gives the seeker their input and gives everyone a reset. For the over-responsive student, heavy work still helps — deep pressure is calming across profiles — but keep it predictable and self-directed. A wall push they choose is regulating; a surprise squeeze from a well-meaning adult is not.
On weighted vests: skip them. Two reviews found the evidence doesn't support them,4,7 and heavy work delivers the same input without a product.
Should I allow fidgets, wobble cushions, or headphones in class?
Take them one at a time, because the evidence differs.
Fidgets. A 2023 review concluded that fidget toys have been marketed as universal educational supports without a scientific evidence base, and that there is not sufficient support for using them in the classroom.3 The one controlled trial of fidget spinners — 60 children with ADHD, inside an evidence-based classroom program — found attention was worse with the spinner in use, in both phases of the study.2 Your skepticism is justified.
That said, a specific student may benefit from a specific silent tool, and refusing on principle doesn't help them. A workable policy: silent only (no clicking, spinning, or light-up), stays in the lap or under the desk, and the test is whether you notice less disruption within two weeks. If you don't, it hasn't earned its place. If it becomes interesting to other students, it's a distraction, which is much of why spinners tested badly. Wobble cushions and therapy balls. The 2025 review found moderate evidence that alternative seating did not improve attention.1 That is a stronger finding than "no evidence"; it's evidence of no effect. If a student's OT has asked for one as part of a plan, use it as a trial and watch. Headphones and ear defenders. Sensory differences and fine-motor difficulties travel together, and handwriting is where it shows.6 A few accommodations cost nothing and help without a referral.
- Grip. A triangular pencil or a simple grip if the student is white-knuckling. Don't over-correct grasp in a student who is producing legible work.
- Angle. A slant board, or a three-inch binder laid on its side, brings the paper to the wrist and reduces fatigue.
- Resistance. Pushing a crayon on paper taped to the wall, or writing on a vertical surface, loads the shoulder and steadies the hand — the same deep pressure logic as heavy work.1
- Warm-up. Ten seconds of hand squeezes, finger pushes, or firm putty before a writing task.
- Less of it. Reduce the volume of copying for a student who is fighting the pencil. The goal is the content, not the transcription.
- Alternatives. Typing or speech-to-text for longer pieces, so the student's thinking isn't capped by their hand.
